hacked iPhones may “brick” when updated

apple has stated they want to stay “one step ahead” in his iPhone announcement to the UK consumers at the regent street store (see 10:26a).

with that said, many people wanted an iPhone but did not want to work with ATT, so they have figured out how to make it work without a SIM or with a different SIM…

that being said, apple stated that an upcoming software (1.1.1) which will provide the same features as the iPod touch does with iTunes wireless store MAY cause the phones to stop working completely.

The company said that unlocking an iPhone may render an iPhone useless after applying future software updates: “Apple has discovered that many of the unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs available on the Internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone’s software, which will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed.”

what to do? some people posted some suggestions and tips for relocking the iPhone prior to the update being applied. check out this link from tuaw about relocking an unlocked iPhone.
