abandon digital rights management (DRM)?

steve jobs (you all know who he is – right) posted a letter on apple’s website about what the RIAA should do to ensure electronic music continues to be viable into the future.

the primary point behind this document is to say, things can stay the way there are, apple can license fair play to others (to allow itunes music on other devices), or RIAA can do away with the need for DRM.

one interesting thing is that many people think that apple has been the one strong-arming the use of fair play (and keeping it apple-centric) – but in this letter it sounds more like apple is saying – we want to play with other devices and work with other services, only time will tell.

will see if steve has the clout and direction to make this come to fruition.
